How the preacher and I missed Kim

Last Saturday Kim knocked on my door late in the night. He is my friend so I let him in despite the filthy smell of alcohol emanating from his mouth. Before he blacked out on my sofa, he made a call to the 'girl friend', thanking her for the weekend offer and assuring her he was now safe. We did not talk much that night. We couldn't. He was dead drunk.

Early the next day, I asked Kim to accompany me to church. He did it for me. Saying it was a favor for hosting him! He sat next to me in church, half drunk and half sober.

The preacher took to the pulpit and the sermon was well on it's way.

"Would you please turn to your neighbour and say these words to him...." requested the preacher. I took the chance to wake Kim up.

"Tell him neeeeighbooooour! The Lord says you will have peace! No harm will come upon you!" the preacher continued. Kim listened and nodded in agreement. You could tell though that his mind was elsewhere.

Later on that day, I came across these verses in the book of Jeremiah 23:16-24:

16 This is what the LORD Almighty says:
"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions from their own minds,
not from the mouth of the LORD.

17 They keep saying to those who despise me,
'The LORD says: You will have peace.'
And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts
they say, 'No harm will come to you.'

18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD
to see or to hear his word?
Who has listened and heard his word?"

Making me ask myself these questions:

Was I (and the preacher) justified to bless Kim and tell him that it was the LORD?

Did the preacher and I carry out a bookable offense in as far as the word of God is concerned?

Did Kim really need a blessing or a sincere rebuke?
I thought about this and concluded that the preacher and I may have acted as false prophets!

Jeremiah 23:21-22 continues and says:

21 I did not send these prophets,
yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
yet they have prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,
they would have proclaimed my words to my people
and would have turned them from their evil ways
and from their evil deeds.

If on that Sunday evening Kim went and did his thing again, it is no doubt because the preacher and I did not take time to listen to God.

Jesus is the only way to the father, but we are not the only way to Jesus! If you are not sure of what to say to a sinner, stay out of the way!

May we put on the mind of Christ, that we may walk right with Him.
